There’s nothing quite like a picnic. Last week, the UK celebrated National Picnic Week in honour of the age-old British tradition of eating picnic finger food on a blanket in the sun (hopefully!) And throughout July, it’s National Picnic Month, giving you plenty more time to celebrate this joyous occasion and get baking! If you’re planning your next picnic, you’ll want to make sure you serve delicious food to keep everyone happy. Of course you’ll already be considering the savoury favourites of sausage rolls, sandwiches and scotch eggs, but what about picnic desserts? No picnic is complete without sweet treats, and we’ve got the perfect selection for you! From cupcakes and cookies to a real show-stopping summer dessert, have a look through our picnic foods list to find our favourite picnic food ideas and some easy cake recipes for picnics too.
Just in time for picnic season, our very own baking kit recipe for June is the summer-favourite, Strawberry & Almond Squares. They make the perfect picnic finger food, combining plump, seasonal strawberries and crunchy almonds in a more-ish little square.
You can make them in advance and package them up in a Tupperware box to keep them moist in your picnic hamper. And if you have any leftover after the picnic, warm them up in the oven for a few minutes and serve with a generous helping of cream. Delicious! To make your very own Strawberry & Almond Squares, pick up a limited edition baking kit in the Bake Shop now - while stocks last!
Nothing quite beats an ice cold Gin & Tonic in the summer - except maybe a Gin & Tonic Cupcake! These little morsels of delight make the perfect picnic dessert for adults, with a gin-soaked sponge topped with a gin buttercream, lime zest and lime wedge. This really is summer in a cake!
And you won’t believe how easy they are to make. We have created a Gin & Tonic Cupcake kit complete with all the dry ingredients you need with cupcake cases and step-by-step recipe card, plus a miniature bottle of gin and a bottle of tonic. The only difficult part is not drinking the Gin & Tonic before you’ve managed to put it in the cake mix!
Muffins make a fantastic picnic food as they’re easy to make in advance and they store beautifully. And with a whole host of flavours to choose from, you’re bound to find one that pleases your family and friends at your next picnic.
Our Toffee Apple Muffins make delicious summer desserts - they’re not just for autumn! With a delightful mix of cinnamon spiced sponge, crammed with apple and walnuts. Crunchy on the outside but soft in the middle, we’ve found ourselves planning picnics JUST so we have an excuse to make more of these beauties! Why not top them with crushed malted chocolates, marshmallows and caramel sauce for an extra treat?
We’ve perfected our brownie recipe over the past few years, and we think we’ve now got it spot on. Our ultimate brownie kit is is a gooey treat bursting with Belgian dark and white chocolate chunks, and it’s available in the Bake Shop now.
Cookies of any variety are a great little picnic dessert. Their individual portion sizes make them super easy to eat whilst out and about, and they’re even easier to make. But you really can’t beat our carrot cake cookies for an irresistible twist on a classic. With a chewy, oaty cookie base lightly spiced with cinnamon and packed full of grated carrot and raisins, the cream cheese icing tops them off perfectly.
